Andhra Pradesh municipal elections counting on April 9

Hyderabad: The counting of votes polled in Sunday’s municipal elections in Andhra Pradesh will be taken up on April 9 as the state high court Tuesday rejected a petition seeking postponement of the process till the general elections.

The court did not agree with the argument of the petitioner that counting of votes polled in municipal elections may influence the voting in assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

As per the schedule announced by the state election commission, the counting of votes was to be taken up on April 2 but the high court has now postponed it till April 9.

The political parties had opposed declaration of municipal results before the general elections but the state election commission had declined to change the schedule.

The petitioner’s lawyer, however, said with the high court’s verdict, they now have the chance to move the Supreme Court, which last week had directed the election commission not to declare the results of rural local bodies before May 7.

Over 73 percent polling was recorded Sunday in the elections to 146 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations in the state.

In what is being described as the semifinal before the general elections, 73.16 percent of 95 lakh voters cast their votes to elect candidates for 3,990 wards in 146 municipalities, and 2,507 divisions in 10 municipal corporations.

There are 17,864 contestants in the fray in the municipalities and another 3,343 candidates are testing their fortunes in the corporations.

The Supreme Court on March 27 had directed state election commission not to declare the results of rural local body elections before May 7.

Hearing a petition challenging the election commission’s decision to announce the results of panchayat raj elections on April 13, the court asked the election authorities to declare the results after May 7.

The petitioner had argued that the results could impact the simultaneous elections to state assembly and Lok Sabha scheduled in two phases on April 30 and May 7.

The elections to 1,096 Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs) and 16,589 Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs) are scheduled on April 6 and 11.

The state election commission had to announce schedules for elections to rural and urban local bodies on the directions of the Supreme Court and the state high court respectively.

The local body polls were announced even as the Election Commission declared the dates for elections to state assembly and the Lok Sabha.

Hyderabad: Fresh with his success in the form of ‘Legend’ Bala Krishna wants to take the political plunge.

This is not for the first time that Balayya wanted a political role for himself. The difference this time is, TDP chief Chandra Babu Naidu might not be able to say no. It is another issue if Naidu finds an “easy way out” in the form of roping in Power star Pawan Kalyan.

But Balayya is TDP’s “very own man” and another NTR scion Harikrishna is said to be unhappy.

Indications to the extent that Balayya is keen to contest elections, have already emerged. Balayya Fans associations have come out in the open. They demanded a political role to Balayya.

For a while, there were reports that he wants Naidu to make him the working president of the party.

It is for this reason that Balayya has taken up “Legend Simha yatras” across Seemandhra districts for three days, starting Tuesday.

Hyderabad: Telugu movie star Akkineni Nagarjuna who has also starred in several Hindi movies, met BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad on Sunday evening and announced that India needed a "change" which Modi as Prime Minister should usher in.

"I would like Modi to become the Prime Minister and expand the Gujarat model of development across the country," Nagarjuna said after an hour-long meeting with the Gujarat Chief Minister.

However, Nagarjuna maintained that he would not enter politics and did not seek a Lok Sabha ticket either for him or his wife Amala.

"All stories in the media about our seeking election tickets is baseless. We have not sought and will not seek tickets," Nagarjuna, son of late Telugu thespian Akkineni Nageswara Rao asserted.

Nagarjuna is the second top Telugu movie star after union minister K Chiranjeevi's youngest brother Pawan Kalyan to have met Modi in the past one week and wish he becomes the Prime Minister.

Pawan Kalyan recently floated his own political outfit called Jana Sena and also supported Modi. For the record, Nagarjuna said that he met Modi only to know more about Gujarat's development.

"I was amazed to see Internet and also wi-fi even in a village. There is uninterrupted power supply across Gujarat, whereas the place where I live in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, has a three-hour power cut," Nagarjuna said.

"I was also amazed to see a river front in Gujarat, which I have seen only in China and some other countries.

It will be nice if Narendra Modi becomes the Prime Minister and translates this development to other parts of the country as well," Nagarjuna said.

On the other hand, Nagarjuna meeting BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is just an Election campaigning stunt, says Political analysts.

10.10 am: Objects found in the southern search corridor, says Australian authorities

In a press meet, Australian authorities said that though they can't confirm if the objects photographed by the satellite indeed belong to the missing Malaysian plane, they have been found in the search area for the jet, determined by the investigation agencies. "Commercial satellites have been redirected to take high resolution images of the objects," says officials, adding that the objects are 'indistinct' in the available images. "It could be containers from the ships fallen from board, it could be something else. But since they have been spotted in the search areas, we are trying to make sure what they are," said John Young, an Australian official, when asked if objects of those dimensions are usually spotted in the sea at other times. They also said that several aircraft have been deployed to search the area properly and the country has been regularly briefing all other countries involved in the search.

10.03 am: Objects spotted might not be from missing Malaysian jet, says Australian authorities Following is the full text of the statement issued by the AMSA on the objects spotted in Southern Indian Ocean, by Australian satellite:

Statement from AMSA Emergency Response Division General Manager John Young * All times will be expressed in Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority is coordinating the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines aircraft, with assistance from the Australian Defence Force, the New Zealand Air Force and the United States Navy. AMSA’s Rescue Coordination Centre Australia has received satellite imagery of objects possibly related to the search for the missing aircraft, flight MH370.

RCC Australia received an expert assessment of commercial satellite imagery on Thursday. The images were captured by satellite. They may not be related to the aircraft. The assessment of these images was provided by the Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation as a possible indication of debris south of the search area that has been the focus of the search operation. The imagery is in the vicinity of the search area defined and searched in the past two days.

Four aircraft have been reoriented to the area 2500 kilometres south-west of Perth as a result of this information. A Royal Australian Air Force Orion aircraft arrived in the area about 1.50pm. A further three aircraft have been tasked by RCC Australia to the area later today, including a Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion and United States Navy P8 Poseidon aircraft. The Poseidon aircraft is expected to arrive at 3pm. The second RAAF Orion is expected to depart RAAF Base Pearce at 6pm.

The New Zealand Orion is due to depart at 8pm. A RAAF C-130 Hercules aircraft has been tasked by RCC Australia to drop datum marker buoys. These marker buoys assist RCC Australia by providing information about water movement to assist in drift modelling. They will provide an ongoing reference point if the task of relocating the objects becomes protracted. A merchant ship that responded to a shipping broadcast issued by RCC Australia on Monday is expected to arrive in the area about 6pm.

Royal Australian Navy ship HMAS Success is en route to the area but is some days away from this area. She is well equipped to recover any objects located and proven to be from MH370. The focus for AMSA is to continue the search operation, with all available assets. The assets are searching for anything signs of the missing aircraft. Weather conditions are moderate in the Southern Indian Ocean where the search is taking place. Poor visibility has been reported. AMSA continues to hold grave concerns for the passengers and crew on board.

9.40 am: Reports suggest that a Malaysian minister has confirmed new lead in probe

According to latest reports, a Malaysian minister has confirmed to news agency Reuters that a new lead has emerged in the search for the missing flight MH370. The announcement comes immediately after the Australian PM declared that satellite images have spotted objects that might be parts of the missing plane. The Wall Street Journal has also reported that Malaysia Defense Ministry has issued a statement saying aircraft, vessels en Route to verify possible debris in southern Indian Ocean.

9.10 am: Finding plane top priority, says US President Barack Obama

Associated Press reports that President Barack Obama has said finding out what happened to the missing Malaysia Airlines plane is a top priority for the US. In his first public comments on the mind-boggling disappearance, Obama said Wednesday that every available U.S. resource is being used in the search, including the FBI, the National Transportation Safety Board and others who deal with aviation. Finding the plane will take time because the search area is so vast, he said, but the U.S. will continue working in close cooperation with the Malaysian government, which is leading the investigation, "to see if we can get to the bottom of this."

8.45 am: Has Australian search team spotted parts of the plane?

Australia's prime minister says objects possibly related to the missing Malaysia Airlines flight have been spotted on satellite imagery. Prime Minister Tony Abbott told Parliament in Canberra on Thursday that a Royal Australian Airforce Orion has been diverted to the area to attempt to locate the objects. The Orion is expected to arrive in the area Thursday afternoon. Three additional aircraft are expected to follow for a more intensive search. It was also reported that the Australian Maritime Safety Authority will hold a media briefing soon.

7.42 am: Malaysia seeks FBI help to analyse simulator data

The FBI joined forces with Malaysian authorities in analyzing deleted data on a flight simulator belonging to the pilot of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane, while distraught relatives of the passengers unleashed their anger — wailing in frustration at 12 days of uncertainty. Files containing records of flight simulations were deleted Feb. 3 from the device found in the home of the Malaysia Airlines pilot, Capt. Zaharie Ahmad Shah, Malaysian police chief Khalid Abu said. It was not immediately clear whether investigators thought that deleting the files was unusual. The files might hold signs of unusual flight paths that could help explain where the missing plane went. Then again, the files could have been deleted simply to clear memory for other material. Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein told a news conference that Zaharie is considered innocent until proven guilty.

The Group of Ministers has finally conceded the demand of Seemandhra to make Hyderabad as the joint capital for 10 years and that the law and order will be in hands of the center, i.e. Governor. The indication came after the total rejection of the demand to make it an Union Territory after the GoM decision was endorsed by UPA chair person Sonia Gandhi a day ago.

According to indications the GOM and the Antony committee have also affirmed that the Telangana government will not have any stake on resumption of the land assets granted to the Seemandhra industrialists. These are some of the main aspects of the GoM report likely to be given to Union cabinet by today or next week .

Union home ministry sources said that the exercise has begun to draft the final Telangana bill to remove any loop holes and missing issues so that everything will be before the cabinet next week for its endorsement.
